Theft of Treasured Church Candlesticks
A Pair of 18th century brass candlesticks 45 cm high have been stolen from Shoreham Church and strenuous efforts are being made to find them
using all modern methods of communication including face book and twitter.
Both candlesticks have a distinctive fleur-de-lys decorative crest around the rims some of which is missing due to the fact that they were stolen in about 1890 and found dumped in a sack in the River Darent near the paper mill.
At the time the parishioners did not want the cross or candlesticks on the high altar. However the then Vicar was requested by the Archbishop of Canterbury to replace them on the altar and this was done against the wishes of the Parishioners.
Since that time they have given great joy to us during Christmas and Easter and other special services and they are much missed.
We are indebted to the Knole Decorative and Fine Arts Society for the detailed description and photograph.
